Example Team 3: CICO

(This is a slide show. You really won't get
anything out

of it unless you have a graphical web browser with graphics turned
on.)

* This was not the same consultant who "fixed" the tool. So, about 1.20-1.25 headcount at consultant rates went into source code management on a total project size of 10 developers. (The third team of 1 developer didn't use the team programming tool, or the time spent by the builder would have been greater.)

Pitfalls

  • Only one team member knew how to do builds.

  • The tool itself was really not ready for commercial use.

  • The tool did not prevent developers -- smart ones -- from repeatedly making mistakes that required restoring backup tapes.

  • The overall structure of the code module tree was echoed in an enormous, matching, directory tree structure. It was very cumbersome to restructure the tree.

  • The tool maintainer found it far easier to bypass the tool in Smalltalk and make manual edits to the code repository files. He taught some fellow team members to take the same approach. (Subject of a previous horror story.)
