- "Off line" storage may also be simple files, a commercial CASE repository, or a database. The distinguishing feature is not the storage mechanism, but the fact that essential services are user managed.

- Most "glued on" code management systems are designed for ASCII text, and thus store Smalltalk source code, rather than bytecodes. (This also makes them inappropriate for storing complex project related objects, such as styled text, design drawings and schedule/budget information.)
