Individual Environment Needs

(This is a slide show. You really won't get
anything out of it unless you have a graphical web browser with graphics turned
on.)

Horror story

A colleague decided it was a "neat idea" to condense changes onto sources. He didn't make a copy of his changes file. His new sources file was corrupt and his good changes file was gone. Yes, his team was using a commercial Smalltalk source code management tool, but it required the developers to take explicit action to use it (not "automagic" at all, more like a black art).

Outcome? He lost many days worth of code, and had to start from what was in the repository from his last check in.

Moral: team programming tools are worthless if not "automagic" and they don't get used, and, never do an operation that can corrupt an important file without backing it up first.
