Expand-Contract Development

(This is a slide show. You really won't get
anything out of it unless you have a graphical web browser with graphics turned
on.)

Contract Expand at work in the spiral model:

  1. release 1.2 is a partial milestone release that lacks the full functionality needed by the completed application.

  2. added functionality is specified that more closely approaches the desired end result.

  3. the "detailed design" for that new functionality is defined, in the form of a well commented prototype.

  4. the new functionality is released as 1.3 for user and peer review.

  5. the new release is examined for re-usability issues, subclassability, generality, possible factoring, and user and peer response.

  6. a re-factored release is produced (1.4) that has no new functionality; it consists entirely of bug fixes and restructuring, and is defined to be the same size as, or smaller than, the previous release.

  7. repeat the cycle as needed, using odd/even release numbers.
