Expand-Contract Development

Contract Expand at work in the spiral model:
- release 1.2 is a partial milestone release that lacks the full
functionality needed
by the completed application.
- added functionality is specified that more closely approaches the
desired end result.
- the "detailed design" for that new functionality is
defined, in the form of a well
commented prototype.
- the new functionality is released as 1.3 for user and peer
review.
- the new release is examined for re-usability issues,
subclassability, generality,
possible factoring, and user and peer response.
- a re-factored release is produced (1.4) that has no new
functionality; it consists
entirely of bug fixes and restructuring, and is defined to be the same
size as, or
smaller than, the previous release.
- repeat the cycle as needed, using odd/even release numbers.
