Integrated Spelling Correction It's a fact of life that many brilliant technical people cannot spell gud. This often causes them to neglect proper documentation out of embarrasment. We developed our UNIX/VisualWorks® integrated spelling correction framework to help these people, but it can easily find much wider use, including in end-user applications. It works in two different ways, depending on need and preferences of the user: Semi-interactive mode, in which one or more words to be checked are selected, and paste > corrected spelling is selected from the text editor menu. The spelling of each word is checked in turn. If a questionable spelling is detected, that word is displayed in red, and an interactive dialog helps the user choose a suitable alternative. Fully interactive mode, in which punctuation, white-space, or insertion point movement causes the word just typed to be immediately checked, causing the user to be signalled (by flashing the window, playing a sound, or other action). The user can then initiate the interaction described above by using a selectable "hot key."
