    Improved Inspectors

The VisualWorks® inspectors have been around a long time, and they show it. We've made the following changes and enhancements to the inspector facility:

    1. Improved subclassability, with menus stored in class instance variables.
    2. Force an update of the inspector, especially useful for variable-sized objects.
    3. browse the class of a selected object.
    4. browse references to the selected named instance variable.
    5. inspect references to the selected object.
    6. copy and paste objects between inspectors.
    7. copy name of the selected field into the ParagraphEditor paste buffer.
    8. New SetInspector that shows non-nil fields by their contents.
    9. New TextInspector that allows editing of styled Text .
    10. New ContextInspector that opens a debugger on the Context under inspection.

    Hierarchical Inspecting

We've added a brand-new inspection facility that allows you to inspect objects to an arbitrary depth without opening additional windows.

Here is an example of a Hierarchical Inspector. In addition to the new Inspector features, it adds:

    1. Browse by reference type: readers , writers , or all .
    2. send... a message to a selected object.
    3. truncate... to a selected number of fields.
    4. basic/enhanced toggle switches off field interpretation.
    5. Field interpretation is implemented by the object under inspection -- no more need to implement an entire Inspector subclass simply to obtain an improved presentation.

A separate expression area is independent of the selected field.
